Rodney

Software Engineer

Why did you choose ITA?
In June 1998, when the company consisted of only four people (Jeremy Wertheimer, Carl de Marcken, Jim Rees, and Dave Baggett), Carl showed me a demonstration of the search engine that they had built up to that point. I was blown away. The technology that they had developed was far, far superior to what was currently available; it made the decision to join the company an easy one.

What's been your most exciting achievement at ITA?
Building the QPX shopping platform from scratch in those early days was incredibly fun, interesting, and challenging. Launching our internal website - the first website ever backed by QPX - and getting and responding to the feedback of our users at that time was an experience I'll never forget.

What interesting things have you learned outside of your job responsibilities at ITA or from ITA co-workers?
One really cool thing about ITA is that it has many similarities to working in an academic environment, such as a lab. There are weekly technical talks on a large variety of topics, often not directly related to our software (for example, a recent talk about advanced origami). ITA people tend to be passionate people, and that spreads to topics outside of our software; you'll find experts here in skydiving, Scrabble, yoga, and a variety of other areas.

What activities/hobbies are you involved in outside of ITA?
Tennis, soccer (on the ITA indoor soccer team!), disc golf, ice hockey, snorkeling, hiking, documentary filmmaking, and going to the beach!
