Development Manager, Airline Pricing and Shopping System

At ITA Software, the Development Manager will have the opportunity to lead a team of extraordinary software developers supporting product development and delivery for the company’s industry leading pricing and shopping systems (QPX). You will be an integral part of a development organization which operates in a rapidly growing, dynamic environment. Day to day, you will manage the developers on your team through multiple, often simultaneous projects collaborating with other development managers and working cross functionally with technical resources to successfully achieve project and product deliverables. In your role as manager, you will be asked to facilitate and document decisions made by team members, rather than making design decisions for them. However, you will be expected to recognize critical technical, architectural, project, and business issues and escalate them as appropriate to senior management.

Responsibilities:

• Manage deliverables by building consensus across departments; assess, analyze and communicate around project status.
• Understand ITA's development methodology and encourage all team members to adhere to its guiding principles while developing and improving processes for your team.
• Communicate effectively with team members, technical leads, and other managers and customers.
• Manage multiple projects simultaneously and translate the technical and business context and implications of deliverables to team members.
• Lead decision making processes that engage all relevant parties.
• Ensure that developers are working on the right things.
• Hire, support and evaluate staff and protect the team from unnecessary distractions.
• Understand how much management each team member needs, and adjust accordingly.

Qualifications:

• BS in computer science, mathematics or physical sciences or equivalent work experience. Advanced degree in a relevant field is valuable.
• 5+ years experience software development management is required; experience as a software engineer is also valuable.
• Proven track record of technical leadership and mentoring.

Special Knowledge/Skills Required:

• Understanding of software development processes and familiarity with software project management tools and principles
• Excellent communication skills, especially listening; proven ability to probe and validate proposed solutions.
• Ability to motivate and lead a team toward delivery goals on schedule.
• High level of personal responsibility.
• Exhibit resourcefulness to achieve goals and make decisions with incomplete information.
• Proven ability to switch among multiple projects quickly and to remain calm in the face of uncertainty and change.
• Patient but firm.
• Excited by learning.
